The cross stands as the most powerful symbol of love and sacrifice in history. It marks the moment Jesus gave everything for humanity—dying and rising again to offer new life. This series, Road to the Cross, invites everyone, whether church members or visitors, to reflect deeply on what Jesus has done for us. More than just remembering His death and resurrection, it calls us to respond with heartfelt gratitude and a life of obedience. This response means choosing to honor Jesus by surrendering worldly pleasures and personal preferences, recognizing that following Him is the least we can do in light of His sacrifice.

Understanding the Price Jesus Paid

Jesus’ death on the cross was not just a tragic event; it was a deliberate act of love and obedience to God’s plan. He bore the weight of our sins, endured suffering, and faced death so that we could be reconciled with God. This sacrifice was costly—Jesus gave up His life, His comfort, and His divine privileges to save us.

When we truly grasp the price Jesus paid, it changes how we see everything. It’s not just a story from the past but a present reality that demands a response. The cross calls us to remember that our sins were nailed there, and because of that, we are offered forgiveness and new life.

Living in Gratitude

Gratitude is more than a feeling; it is a way of life. When we recognize the depth of Jesus’ sacrifice, gratitude naturally flows from our hearts. This gratitude shapes our actions and decisions.

  • Giving up worldly pleasures: Gratitude means we no longer seek fulfillment in temporary things that pull us away from God. Instead, we find joy in living according to His will.

  • Choosing obedience over convenience: Sometimes following Jesus means making hard choices, like putting aside personal preferences or comforts. Gratitude helps us see these sacrifices as small compared to what Jesus gave.

  • Worship as a lifestyle: Worship is not just singing songs on Sunday. It’s honoring Jesus in how we live every day—through kindness, honesty, and love.

Obedience as a Response to Love

Obedience is often misunderstood as a set of rules to follow. In the context of Jesus’ sacrifice, obedience is a loving response. It flows from a heart transformed by grace.

  • Obedience is worship: When we obey Jesus, we show that we trust Him and value His guidance.

  • It means surrendering control: Following Jesus may require giving up control over our lives, plans, and desires. This surrender is an act of faith and gratitude.

  • It leads to freedom: Though it may seem restrictive, obedience frees us from the bondage of sin and leads to a fuller, richer life.

Consider the story of a person who chooses honesty in a difficult situation, even when lying would be easier. This act of obedience honors Jesus and reflects the gratitude they feel for His sacrifice.

The Challenge of Giving Up Preferences

Following Jesus is not always easy. It often means giving up personal preferences, habits, or comforts. This can be challenging, but it is part of living a life that honors the cross.

  • Small sacrifices matter: Giving up a favorite pastime or habit can be a meaningful way to show gratitude.

  • Big sacrifices show trust: Sometimes, following Jesus means making major life changes, like choosing a different career path or lifestyle.

  • Community support helps: Walking this path is easier when we support one another in faith and obedience.

For instance, someone might choose to volunteer regularly at church or in the community, even if it means less free time. This choice reflects a willingness to prioritize Jesus over personal convenience.

Encouragement to Embrace the Cross Daily

The cross is not just a one-time event to remember but a daily call to live differently. Embracing the cross means:

  • Reflecting regularly on Jesus’ sacrifice

  • Responding with gratitude in thoughts, words, and actions

  • Choosing obedience as a way to honor Him

This journey is ongoing and requires commitment. It is a path that leads to deeper relationship with Jesus and a life marked by purpose and joy.
